Do overlap hours improve decision yield in offshore editorial work?

Does the shared working window between a Philippines-based content team and onshore owners reduce consequential waiting? Overlap is a limited resource. Its value depends on which decisions it resolves, not simply how many people attend.

Methodology and scope

Observe a defined set of overlap sessions and related asynchronous threads. Before each session, classify agenda items as information, clarification, choice, exception, or specialist escalation. Record preparation, required decision owner, result, next action, and subsequent waiting time. Compare with similar issues handled asynchronously. The unit of analysis is an agenda item.

Distributed-work and meeting guidance supports deliberate synchronous work, documented outcomes, and clear responsibility. It does not prescribe an optimal overlap window or prove causality for this team. The decision-yield measure is our inference.

Interpretation

A session has useful yield when it resolves or correctly routes a decision that would otherwise wait. Routine status that was already visible should not count. Neither should a quick answer that bypasses evidence or the authorized owner. Review quality and reversals alongside speed.

Limitations

Teams may initially reserve their hardest issues for meetings, creating selection bias. A short observation period misses learning effects and seasonal workload. Time-zone fatigue, language, hierarchy, and facilitation may affect participation. The method cannot show that one schedule suits every role or person.
