How to design a Philippines offshore work sample that tests the real role
Build a fair fictional exercise around the records, handoffs, quality checks, and exception judgment the role will use every week.
Decision in brief
A Philippines offshore work sample is useful when it mirrors the decisions, records, and handoffs in the approved role. Avoid a generic typing or personality exercise. If the job is recruitment administration, test a schedule conflict and candidate-status update; if it is finance support, test a reconciliation exception without asking the applicant to approve money.
Keep the exercise small enough to review consistently. The objective is not to simulate a whole week. It is to observe how the candidate reads instructions, protects evidence, handles uncertainty, and leaves the next owner a usable record.
- Use fictional records that resemble the real role without exposing personal data.
- Include one normal case, one omission, one conflict, and one escalation.
- Score the output against observable rules before judging presentation.
- Ask the candidate to explain what they would not decide alone.
Design the packet deliberately
Give every candidate the same brief, source records, output format, and time limit. Include a normal item so basic execution is visible, then add a missing field, conflicting dates, and a request that exceeds the role boundary.
State what may be assumed and what must be flagged. A good sample tests judgment under defined rules; it should not reward guessing what the evaluator secretly wanted.
Score evidence before style
Use a scorecard with separate lines for completeness, factual accuracy, sequence, escalation quality, and privacy handling. A polished answer that changes a status without support should not pass because it sounds confident.
Have two reviewers compare a small set of outputs against the same pass rules. Record disagreements and improve the rubric before using it again, especially when the work involves sensitive records or customer impact.
Read the handoff as part of the answer
Ask for a short note to the manager: what is done, what is blocked, what evidence supports the result, and what decision is needed. This reveals whether the candidate can make progress without hiding uncertainty.
The note should name the record and next action, not merely say “please review.” In distributed work, a precise handoff often prevents more delay than an extra paragraph in the completed task.
Keep the sample fair and bounded
Do not request unpaid production work, real applicant outreach, or access to live systems. Remove personal information and explain how the sample will be evaluated. Keep the same materials and reasonable time for every candidate.
Use the result as one hiring input alongside the approved criteria. It can show how someone handles the role’s work; it cannot prove every future skill or justify a broad claim about a country or talent pool.
